HELP! My Reptile is Sick!

HELP! My Reptile is Sick!

Believe it or not, waiting until your reptile is sick is the absolutely worst possible thing to do! “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” as Benjamin Franklin would say. Most animals, reptiles (and birds) in particular, have a way of survival that includes not showing signs of weakness until it’s no longer possible to hide it. That would make them easy prey, right? So by the time you are noticing things that seem off, your baby has likely been feeling down for a little while. That’s the time to find your local trusted reptile veterinarian, not shop online for cures. “But I don’t have the money” or “I don’t have a good local Reptile Veterinarian!” you might say. Trust me when I say that I understand 100%. I too have struggled to find adequate reptile care. Taken my babies to veterinarians that should have been trusted only to find their skills lacking and their knowledge dated. At this point, with a sick animal, you just don’t have time to waste.

This is how our site was born. Out of the need of a few, along with our love of the animals that we know deserves better. Prevention is always key when it comes to caring for our reptiles. However, you can supplement properly, feed perfectly, keep temperature on point and things can still happen. It’s important to have a contingency plan in place for such instances. So, we introduced our First Aid Kit. Not only does it come in a snazzy storage container (super cute), but it contains some of the items all reptile owners should keep on hand so that you are able to handle most situations as soon as they arrive. I have put together a list for you that all reptile owners should keep in their cabinets for such emergencies. Our hearts break for you when you message us in dire need, but we still need to wait for the post office to deliver. We all know in this day and age that delivery companies are just not reliable and we have to expect delays. We are also sad that we just do not have the resources (ahem, we see you Amazon…) to deliver next day as we are just a small family-owned company that makes every medication to order and packs our items with love which can take extra time.

Good news is,  we’ve come up with a list for you! Anyone who knows me knows how much I LOVE lists. We’ve put together some items for you that will keep you going through the year so that you are able to start tackling problems at the first sign and give treatment immediately, or get treatment started while you search for a reputable veterinarian. These items are good for 6 months up to two years depending on the item (remember flavored items do not keep as long..) so they are great to keep on hand for those “just in case” moments.

First Aid Kit – Our first aid kit contains many of the items that we would recommend separately but in a super cute little container that keeps everything organized. We will of course list the must haves separately as well.

Fenbendazole – Our favorite dewormer. The #1 go to for cases of pinworms, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, lungworms, some tapeworms along with Giardia. Such an easy going treatment that can be used as a preventative up to twice per year.

Toltrazuril – Ahhh Coccidia. The bane of our reptile ownership. While naturally occurring in their systems, small numbers are ok, however coccidia blooms cause diarrhea, restlessness, and blood in the stool, which can definitely be scary! Coccidia can also cause dehydration, weight loss, and organ damage if not controlled.

Activated Charcoal Suspension – A must have to keep on hand for your baby’s safety, especially if allowed to explore the outdoors. Accidental ingestion happens (if you own a bearded dragon, then you know how they love to eat EVERYTHING), and we need to be prepared in case of ingestion of toxic toads, bugs or plants.

Colloidal Silver – An amazing product to keep on hand! Colloidal Silver is an anti-bacterial that can be used orally, or topically. You can even use it in a nebulizer for direct treatment into the lungs for Respiratory Infections. Got a nasty wound? Put some colloidal silver on it.. Goopy eyes? Put colloidal silver in it. This is really a miracle supplement in the world of holistic animal care.

Probiotic Powder – During times of stress or illness, bad bacteria in the gut can overtake our little one’s systems. You need to help fight that (or replace the good that dies off during times of medication) by supplementing with probiotics.

ReptiHeal Holistic Treatment for Bacterial & Upper Respiratory Infections – Our own formulated holistic treatment for upper respiratory and bacterial infections in reptiles. Can be used both orally and topically (not in the nebulizer please) it’s full of the good stuff known for helping to fight respiratory issues, especially when given at the first signs and combined with colloidal silver in the nebulizer.

Anti-Protozole Treatment – Used to treat everything from parasites to bacterial infections. Common medication to increase good gut flora while eliminating protozoa and coccidia. Also, very effective treatment for babies that refuse food.

Serrapeptase – An enzyme found in silkworms that aids the natural healing process. In cases of Respiratory Illness, it reduces and thins mucous to help remove bacterial infections from the lungs. It helps relieve pain by inhibiting the inflammatory response so tissue can regenerate. It also digests any non-living tissue and breaks down the fibrin in scar tissue, blood and secretions.

We hope that you find this list helpful! These are all items we keep on hand at all times for cases of emergency. We always continue to process your orders as quickly as possible, but keeping these items on hand will lessen your very stressful situation with your babies and help get treatment as quickly as possible. Remember, prevention and preparation are the most critical steps to keeping our reptiles healthy and happy!
